From the humble beginnings of America the word woodsman
(or woodman) is defined as "one acquainted with or accustomed to the
woods." Until the late 1800's, the word huntsman was a common synonym.
Both words implied the knowledge of a natural ease in an uninhabited
environment, and a quality of resignation, contentment, and felicity.
These folks had the mental capacity to memorize an unlimited
variety of minute detail, and the ability to map one's wanderings and not get
lost. They commanded an instinct for self-preservation. They defined an
individual who could be self-sufficient for an indeterminate period of time,
under any climatic condition. In a blizzard, for instance, it might be
impossible to retrace one's steps; the only option was to proceed ahead. Today
we'd call it an "extreme sport," with no turning back, and no rescue. In
historic American terms, superior woodsmanship was the quality required by every
still hunter and long hunter every settler and adventurer. Woodsmanship and
"Boone" were synonymous.
Here we would like to give the men and women who recognize
woodsmanship within their lives a place to visit, learn, grow, share and
develop the God given resources that I believe reside in every one of us. Yes I
am a preacher, pastor and minister by calling, by trade I am an electronics
technician, by nature I am a woodsman and here I welcome other woodsmen and
outdoorsmen, the Christian and the curious; man or woman to join me.
Woodsmanship does have a biblical relationship, we will explore it and use it in
our attempt to revive Americas
Christian Heritage. Join our expedition!
