Wisdom of Gods Word

Psalm 119:105-112

Introduction: When you read the Bible what does it mean to you? What do you glean from it? How does it affect your life? These are three of many we can discuss when we talk about the word of God and its influence in our life. The word of God contains wisdom. We don’t hear that word a lot today, according to the Noah Webster dictionary of the English language wisdom means The right use or exercise of knowledge; the choice of laudable ends, and of the best means to accomplish them. This is wisdom in act, effect, or practice. If wisdom is to be considered as a faculty of the mind, it is the faculty of discerning or judging what is most just, proper and useful, and if it is to be considered as an acquirement, it is the knowledge and use of what is best, most just, most proper, most conducive to prosperity or happiness. Wisdom in the first sense, or practical wisdom, is nearly synonymous with discretion. I differs somewhat from prudence, in this respect; prudence is the exercise of sound judgment in avoiding evils; wisdom is the exercise of sound judgment either in avoiding evils or attempting good. Prudence then is a species, of which wisdom is the genus.” All of scripture contains wisdom for God’s people to practice God’s will in their life. The scripture we are looking at today is David’s 119th Psalm the longest chapter in the Bible from the 105th verse to the 112th verse there are many tracks of wisdom to follow, for today God has led me to the “Wisdom of Gods Word.” Lets look at these scriptures follow that theme and let God speak to our hearts.

For clear understanding, “word” is daw-bawr' in the Hebrew and means -

a word; by implication a matter (as spoken of) of thing; adverbially a cause: It appears over 1400 times and there are no fewer than 85 different English words used in the KJV to translate the Hebrew into English equivalents.

         I.      The “Wisdom of Gods Word” gives Instruction to the godly. (V.v. 105-106)

  1. Through instruction (lamp) we have Gods wisdom for our motive (feet).

  1. Through instruction (light) we have Gods wisdom for our manner (path).

  1. Through instruction we have Gods wisdom for our loyalty. In verse 106 David gives an oath to God (sworn…keep thy righteous judgments) and from that oath comes a promise (perform).

II.      The “Wisdom of Gods Word” gives Indictment to the ungodly. (V.v. 107-110)

  1. Through Gods indictment of the wicked; Gods people have intercession for the affliction given by the ungodly. The people of God have always been afflicted by the ungodly and we always will. Just as sure as affliction will come so will our prayers be lifted up to the throne of God where the Lord makes intercession for us.

  1. Through Gods indictment of the wicked we are constantly reminded of His righteous judgment.

III.      The “Wisdom of Gods Word” gives Inheritance to the redeemed. (V.v. 111.-112)

  1. For David Gods law (testimonies) was an inheritance that was permanent (heritage) in his life. For the believer through Jesus Christ (word, logos in the Greek) we have the law removed by Grace and maintain the inheritance of eternal life.
  2. David closes with a promise, or in biblical terms an oath to keep Gods word close to his heart and practice it (perform) even unto the end.

Conclusion: We know the Bible tells us that David was man after Gods own heart. That’s because David had a heart for God and a desire to please Him. If there is one theme I want you to take away from here this morning it is that of having a desire to please God. Do you have that desire today? Are you willing to follow God’s instruction and obtain His inheritance? Are you aware if you continue to ignore Gods call for your salvation you are under eternal indictment? Eternal life is real, you will spend it in one of two places, heaven or hell that choice is yours, God has provided a way out. Close as God leads.
