Three things we know about salvation

1John 5:18-21

Introduction: The letter of 1 John is a general letter, it is not written to any particular church; it is called a circular letter (or visitation charge), sent to various churches, in order to encourage their steadfast adherence to the Lord Christ, and the sacred doctrines concerning his person and office, warning the church against seducers; and instructing them to adorn that doctrine by love to God and man, and especially to each other, as being descended from God, united by the same head, and travelling towards the same eternal life. From this letter we have from among it the teaching of salvation or better said the explanation of salvation. Today we seem to have many thoughts and ideas about salvation, but if we are going to really accept the Bible as God’s word then we must accept it as it is written, with no exceptions. If we accept the Bible as having one interpretation with many applications then the understanding of salvation becomes clear. If you claim Jesus as your lord and savior this morning you should find some encouragement in this message. If you’re here and don’t know Jesus as your lord and savior you can find direction in this message. Lets look at three things we know about salvation.

I.       We know we are secured.

A.    The blood covers our sin

1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1.      We can sin through ignorance (not knowing)

2.      We can sin through arrogance (not discerning)

3.      We can sin through disobedience (not listening)

B.     The blood keeps us from sin

1.      By the in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit

2.      By the revealed word of God

3.      By the promise of chastisement

C.    The blood keeps us from Satan

1.      Our body is a temple with room for only one master

1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?

2.      Our body can be affected but not infected.

Job 2:6 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thine hand; but save his life.

Life - 315 vp,n< nephesh {neh'-fesh}

Meaning:  1) soul, self, life, creature, person, appetite, mind, living being, desire, emotion, passion 1a) that which breathes, the breathing substance or being, soul, the inner being of man 1b) living being 1c) living being (with life in the blood) 1d) the man himself, self, person or individual 1e) seat of the appetites 1f) seat of emotions and passions 1g) activity of mind 1g1) dubious 1h) activity of the will 1h1) dubious 1i) activity of the character 1i1) dubious

II.     We know we are assured.

A.    That God will not throw us away

John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

B.     That God will not allow us to be removed from Him

John 10:29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

(man is an added word by the translators) No is - 3762 ouvdei,j oudeis {oo-dice'} including feminine oudemia {oo-dem-ee'-ah} and neuter ouden {oo-den'}

Meaning:  1) no one, nothing

III.  We know we are received.

A.    Through the union of the Father and the son

1.      Jesus leads us to the Father and the Father to us.

John 13:20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.

2.      Jesus intercedes for us with the Father.

Romans 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

B.     Through the commission of His church.

(we are commanded to do only three things through the great commission)

1.     Lead to salvation

2.      Baptize (it is one of two ordnances and a formal church membership)

3.      Disciple (teaching sound Bible doctrine to grow sound Bible believers)

Conclusion: When I introduced this message I offered encouragement to those who knew Jesus and Lord and savior and direction to those who did not. As I close this message I want to ask you something else. If you don’t know Jesus will you come forward this morning and accept Him as your personal savior. If you already know Him and have realized some need in your life or have realized some unconfessed sin would you come forward and meet God at this alter. I have some scripture to share with you and would be glad to pray with you. If God is dealing with your heart will you come.
