Concerning the Lord’s Supper

I Corinthians 11:17-34

Introduction: As Christians we celebrate two ordinances or rites of the Church. One is water baptism by immersion and the other is Communion or the Lords supper. Today we are celebrating the Lords supper. Traditionally there are three views of qualifications to participate in the Lord’s Supper. The first is called open communion or unrestricted access for everyone. Second is closed communion or participation only for those who belong to a church or denomination by membership. Third and the view I practice is called close communion, I feel this practice is supported through scripture. An individual is given the biblical requirements for participation and each person is responsible for determining their ability for participation. This morning as we prepare to celebrate communion I would like for you to consider God’s warning and wisdom “concerning the Lord’s Supper.”

I.       Avoid posturing

During Paul’s day there was a meal that preceded communion called the common agape meal or love feast? This was supposed to be similar to our covered dish dinners; however it had become a show of influence, prosperity and poverty.

The church had become a group of factions based upon what a family had or didn’t have.

God doesn’t recognize our material possessions, our family name, our financial success or our popularity and authority. God sees only the blood of Jesus Christ or the absence of it.

II.    Partake seriously

We learn from scripture that the Lord had His last supper in connection with the Passover. Jesus Himself tells His disciples to consider the bread his body which is broken for them and the wine or juice His blood which is spilled for you. Our Lord tells us to do this in remembrance of Him.

Communion is not to be taken lightly it is to be observed; by those born again, periodically, and until he comes.

III.  Participate worthily

The word of God tells us not to participate unworthily or in an irreverent manner. This can mean many things and be applied differently to each of us, that is why Paul doesn’t give us and check list. Instead Paul gives us some very real advice, examine ourselves, this way we avoid God’s judgment.

Instead of posturing ourselves before each other we should humble ourselves before the Lord.

Were not just practicing a religious ritual, we are remembering the Lord’s death, burial and resurrection. To do so correctly we must have our heart and life in order according to His directions.

Conclusion: I feel it is important to give each one opportunity to examine and prepare themselves for communion. I don’t want any music, hymns or similar activity. Instead I am going to lead us in prayer, during this prayer time if you have anything unconfessed in your life, now is time to make it right between you and the Lord. If you’re not sure of your salvation, now is time to make sure, if your life isn’t right now is time to make it right. Lead the congregation in prayer. Lead the congregation in communion.
