Walk like Enoch

Hebrews 11:5-6

Introduction: Hebrews chapter 11 is referred to as the roll call of faith; this chapter describes godly men and their walk with God.  One of these men is Enoch, he is one of only two men in the Bible that did not die, but was taken into heaven by God in a miraculous way. Enoch was translated into heaven, in other words he was raptured into heaven by God. Enoch walked so close to God that he wasn’t allowed to die a natural death. Do you know it is possible for you and I to walk that closely with God today, you see we have an advantage that Enoch did not have. We have Jesus Christ. If you are saved today you have the ability to walk like Enoch through…

I.       A Proper Relationship

In Amos 3:3 the Bible tells us “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” This verse was a description of Enoch’s relationship with God, they agreed. Enoch had no rebellion in his heart. A proper relationship with God is based upon faith and our faith is based upon…

A.     Salvation

Ephesians 2:8 tells us “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:” If we want to walk with God like Enoch we need a relationship like Enoch. That will only happen for you and me through the blood of Jesus Christ.

B.    Lordship

Matthew 10:24 tells us “The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.” When we accept Jesus as Savior we accept something else as well we accept Jesus as Lord. We become His servant’s, now some people don’t really like that idea, but we are either servants to sin or to a savior, it’s our choice.  The apostle Paul confirms this in Romans 6:16 “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”

II.    A Proper Fellowship

We hear a lot about fellowship, but do we know what it really is? According to Webster’s dictionary fellowship is “Companionship; society; consort; mutual association of persons on equal and friendly terms.” If you and I are going to walk with God like Enoch we need a fellowship with God like the one Enoch had. Lets not get fellowship confused with companionship, companions may be loyal and sensitive to one another an they can even develop a close relationship over a period of time, they do not share a corresponding nature. Those in fellowship share that corresponding nature, they are one in spirit.

When we are saved we have a new citizenship established in heaven. Paul tells us in Philippians 3:20 “For our conversation [citizenship] is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:” Likewise Peter tells us in 2 Peter 1:3-4 “3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”

Fellowship is something we can break in our walk with God. Enoch cherished his fellowship with God, that’s why he stayed so close to Him. We too can have a closer fellowship with God and I believe if Enoch could have this type of fellowship that we can too, God hasn’t changed, therefore the only one prohibiting it is us.

III. A Sound Discipleship

If we walk with God it will require us to surrender our will to become His will. God will not force this upon anyone, He will offer himself, and then it will be our responsibility to accept His call. Just as God presupposes faith; faith presupposes willingness and that results in a surrendered will.

All this talk of surrender can be summed up in one word “discipleship” which is the New Testament word for surrendering ourselves to God will for our lives and following that will through faith.

Jesus had many disciples in the Bible; these were men and women who followed Him apart from the 12 apostles. Discipleship can be given up as quickly as it is picked up. Temptation, sin and moral failure can interfere with discipleship. The good news is a person can pick up discipleship anytime during their life and begin a walk like Enoch had.

Conclusion: It sounds like Enoch worked very hard to keep his walk with God as close as he did. Maybe, but I believe it was easy for Enoch, you see when God is the highest priority in a persons life pleasing Him isn’t hard. It becomes difficult when the world conflicts with God for our undivided attention. Do you have a walk like Enoch? If not would you like to have a walk like Enoch? You can begin that walk before you leave today. Close as God leads.
