Ten Commandments; what’s the big deal

Galatians 3:19-24

 

 

Intro: You know we continue to hear about the Ten Commandments being taken down, covered up or removed from public places. Have you ever wondered why? We never here anyone tell us they are not necessary, no body tells us we don’t need them, so what’s the big deal. God provided us the Ten Commandments for some very specific reasons. As His needs were fulfilled, the commandments found themselves a useful place in the New Testament age. The Lord left them here for a reason, tonight look with me as we answer the question “wherefore then serveth the law?”

 

  1. The Law was added
    1. Alongside the covenant, not to replace it but to assist it
    2. Transgression required it, man needed to know when they overstepped Gods boundaries. Transgression is violating a standard or Law.

 

  1. The Covenant was and still is first because of
    1. The Covenant came first to Abraham, the Law came later
    2. The Law was temporary, only until the promise (Jesus) would come
    3. The Law was handed down to Moses through Angels; God gave the promise directly to Abraham.

 

  1. The Covenant and the Law do not contradict each other
    1. Trying to live up to the Law will not accomplish salvation, God never said it would.
    2. Using the Law as a measuring stick, we can see where we stand in Gods eyes, when we discover transgression in our lives we are responsible to repent and ask forgiveness. The Lord saves, forgives, and restores, the Law allows us to see our condition.

 

Conc.: The commandments of the Lord are still very necessary in the 21st century. We as a nation we need to be looking at them closer instead of turning away. Our society is consumed with evolution; you see this not only teaches that mankind developed from some organic reaction. Evolution also teaches that we are ever growing in knowledge and as such, we are constantly progressing, and if that’s the case one day, we will be like God. Well as Gods people, we are responsible for being the light and salt of this world, if we show the way others will follow. Believe it or those who are lost and misled, those who have given up on God and His people are still searching. They are looking for answers; we need to be stronger than we ever have. Tonight I want you to understand why God needs you and me to stand straighter, be tougher, we must keep our eyes on the Lord and His commandments even if the world tells us they don’t apply today.
